Deewan Size Guide for Pakistani Homes (with Measurements)

Deewans are a Pakistani drawing-room staple — the unsung hero piece that doubles as seating during the day and a guest bed at night. But "deewan" covers a huge range of sizes and styles, and most buyers end up with the wrong dimensions because no one publishes a simple sizing guide. Here is that guide.

Standard deewan sizes

Most Pakistani-made deewans fall into one of these standard sizes:

Height (seat to floor) is almost always 18 inches across all sizes — designed to match standard center-table height.

How to pick the right length

Measure the wall the deewan will sit against, then subtract 12–18 inches for breathing room. So:

• For a 7-foot wall: choose a 5–6 ft deewan.
• For a 9-foot wall: choose a 6.5–7 ft deewan.
• For wall lengths over 10 ft, consider a "deewan + single seater chair" combination instead of one huge deewan.

Storage variants — usually worth it

Many of our customers order deewans with built-in storage. There are three common storage configurations:

• Pull-out drawer base: two large drawers run the length of the deewan. Great for blankets and seasonal items.
• Lift-up top: the entire seat lifts up on hydraulic hinges. Maximum storage, but slightly heavier mechanism.
• Ottoman-style hidden box: the deewan is essentially a long ottoman with a cushioned top. Most space, lightest mechanism, but no decorative skirt.

Storage adds typically PKR 8,000–15,000 to the price of a deewan — well worth it in apartments and smaller homes.

Cushion configuration

A deewan comes with three cushion layers:

1. Base seat cushion: usually 4–5 inches thick, high-density foam. This is what makes the deewan comfortable.
2. Backrest cushions: usually 3 large rectangular cushions that lean against the wall, or 5–6 throw cushions for a more layered look.
3. Bolsters: long cylindrical cushions at each end of the deewan. Optional but they make the piece feel "complete."

Backrest height — often overlooked

Most Pakistani deewans don't have a hard backrest — they rely on cushions stacked against the wall. This is the right choice for most rooms because:

• The deewan can sit against any wall without worrying about backrest height.
• The cushions can be removed for sleeping use.
• You get to refresh the look just by swapping cushions every year or two.

For "executive" deewans, an upholstered backrest is fixed at 24–28 inches high. This gives a more formal sofa-like look but commits the deewan to a single style.

Fabric choices for deewans

Because deewans are touched and sat on more aggressively than sofas (people lean, sprawl, sleep), the fabric durability matters even more. Recommendations:

• Performance polyester or velvet for daily-use drawing rooms.
• Removable cushion covers if at all possible — they make annual deep cleaning trivial.
• Avoid pure linen or silk blends — they will not survive a Pakistani drawing room with kids.
